can u tell me about the exams of 1st year 2009
1. Disable the Ability to Modify the Start Menu (Windows 98 Only)
Normally users are able to right-click on the Start Menu and modify it using the context menu. This option give you the ability to disable this function.Open your registry and find the key below. Create a new DWORD value named "NoChangeStartMenu", and set the new value to equal "1" to enable the restriction or "0" to disable the restriction.
Note: This restriction can be used either on a user by user basis by adding it to HKEY_CURRENT_USER or on a computer wide basis by adding it to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Settings:
Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
Name: NoChangeStartMenu
Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value: (0 = disable restriction, 1 = enable restriction)
2. Changing Default Colors for Command Prompt (Windows XP/2000 Only)
The value DefaultColor controls the foreground and background colors used incommand prompt windows. It has a default value of 0, for standard white text on a black background. You can replace this value with a two-digit hexadecimal number, in which the
first digit selects a background color and the second a foreground color. A value of F0, for example, would give black text on a white background, and 1E would yield yellow text on a blue background.
Settings:
Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor]
Name: DefaultColor
Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value: (0 = default)
3. Control the CD-ROM Autorun Function
Normally when you insert a disc into your CD-ROM drive, the contents are automatically launched. This tweak allows you to disable this behavior. Open your registry and find the key below.
Settings:
Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom]
Name: Autorun
Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value: (0=disable, 1=enable)
Change to value of 'Autorun', or create a new DWORD value if it doesn't already exist, and set the data to equal '0' for Autorun disabled.
Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
4. Removing the 'Shortcut to...' Text on Shortcuts (Windows 98, XP and 2000 Only)
Don't like having 'Shortcut to...' appended to every Shortcut? You're not alone. With this tip you can stop Windows for adding this text when creating links. Open your registry and find the key below.
Settings:
Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
Name: link
Type: REG_BINARY (Binary Value)
Value: (00 00 00 00 = No Shortcut Text)
5. Reducing the Windows XP startup time
The Windows XP have more booting time then Windows 98. So, with the help of this tip you can start Windows XP in 10 Seconds as well as reducing the startup/booting time or welcome logon screen time.
Go to Run then open Registry Editor by typing regedit and find the under mentioned Key:
Settings:
Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/ContentIndex/]
Name: StartupDelay
Type: decimal
Value: (replace the default Decimal Value 480000 with 40000)
Replace the value not the hexadecimal value but the decimal value (click on decimal). Now Reboot your System. I think u like this tip.
6. Boost Up Internet Connection Bandwidth Without Any Software (By Just Using Registry Editor).
Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc To get it back Folllow The Instructions Below.
Click on Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes.This opens the group policy editor. Then find the key.
Settings:
Key: Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Network ->QOS Packet Scheduler -> Limit Reservable Bandwidth
Now double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.
7. Method show folder
Method 1:
Go to registry editor by running regedit in the run box.
Settings:
Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
Name: hidden
Type: decimal
Value: double click the key and change the value to 1
Now you’re all set to go. Check it in your tools menu if the changes have taken effect.
Method 2:
Go to registry editor by running regedit in the run box {Click “Start” -> “Run…” (or press Windows key + R )Type “regedit” and click “Ok”}
Settings:
Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL]
Name: “CheckedValue”
Type: DWORD (hexadecimal)
Value: double click the key and change the value to 1
The “Show hidden files & folders” check box should now work normally. Enjoy!
8. Different Ways to Speed up and Optimize Windows XP Quick and easy.
The following is a list of easy tweaks you can do to speed up the overall performance of your PC with Windows XP.
1. Disable File Indexing
This indexing service gets info from files on the hard drive and creates a "searchable keyword index."
If you don't use the XP search feature often to look for documents, you can turn this feature off, and the difference you'll notice is a slight increase in the time it takes for your computer to find a file, but an overall increase in general speed for everything else.
How to : From My Computer > right-click on the C: Drive > select Properties.
Uncheck "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching." Apply changes to "C: sub folders and files," and click OK.
2. Clean Up Prefetch, temp, and cache files
Windows stores a lot of temporary files that can be safely cleaned out once a month or so. This is also good to do before running virus or spyware scans, as it clears many things out of your system that would need to be scanned.

3. Install some RAM
If you are running 128mb or 256mb of Ram, it's pretty cheap and easy to upgrade to 512mb. This is the only suggestion I will make that will actually cost money, but it's also the one that will best improve performance.

4. Remove Programs & files you no longer need or use
Having old games or other software you no longer use can take up a lot of space on your hard drive, which can lead to an overall decrease in your PC's performance.
How to : Removing old programs is easy. From the Control Panel click on the "Add or Remove Programs" Icon. You can safely remove programs like games, demos, and other software you no longer use. If you are not sure what a program is... don't delete it just yet. You can do an internet search to find out more about any mystery programs installed on your PC to decide to delete them or not.
Remember: Mp3 music files and videos you download can take up a lot of space. Go through your media files once a month or so and delete the ones you no longer use.
5. Turn off Windows Animations and Visual Effects
Fancy sliding, fading and animated effects that windows uses by default are easily turned off, and will make the reaction time of simple tasks like opening and moving windows, taskbars, etc... much quicker.
How to : From the Control Panel, click on the "System" icon. Click on the Advanced tab. Click the "Settings" button underneath "Performance". Uncheck the options related to animations, and other unneeded visual effects.
Personally, I only have 3 items checked in here: "smooth edges of screen fonts", "use common tasks in folders", and "use visual styles on windows and buttons". You can uncheck all of them if you like. But, just getting rid of all the animated features will help the responsiveness of your PC.
6. Remove unused Fonts
Having too many fonts can realllllllly slow down how fast programs start up. Some people say have no more than 500 fonts installed on WinXP, but I personally try to keep the number of fonts below 200. The less you have the faster your programs that use them (office software, graphic programs etc..) will load.
How to : From the Control Panel, click on the "Fonts" icon. You can delete the fonts you don't use here.
Remember: to keep the basics: Verdana, Arial, Times, Trebuchet, Courier, serif, sans-serif, Georgia, etc... Along with any fonts related to your business.
7. Get a Virus, Spyware and Malware Clean System
Chances are you have some sort of virus, spyware or malware on your computer.
How to : Get Adware and Spybot S&D in addition to a Firewall and Antivirus program. See our guide to virus removal and protection for more ifno.
Remember: Keep your anti-virus programs up-to-date. And always research any software you plan on downloading to "help" your PC. Some anti-virus / anti-spyware software actually have spyware.
8. Speedup Folder Browsing
You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:
* Open My Computer
* Click on Tools menu
* Click on Folder Options
* Click on the View tab.
* Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
* Click Apply
* Click Ok
Reboot your computer
